About Owner, Susan Berry

Susan Berry (Detroit, Michigan) is an international authority on proper ringing. In 2000 she wrote Healthy Ringing, a comprehensive publication that single-handedly changed the way handbell musicians approach their instrument. In the 1980s, Susan co-authored the Learning To Ring curriculum with its two instructional manuals, nine collections of music arrangements, and many visual aids. Additionally, Susan co-authored the popular instructional video Bell Basics, widely used for decades after its production.

Susan has been the featured director or clinician at many national and international music conferences and reading clinics. These included: Pinnacle; HMA National Select Choir 2012; AGEHR Directors' Seminar; the 50th Anniversary Celebration; Ring in Praise, Dunblane, Scotland; National Festival, Puerto Rico; dozens of regional festivals around the United States; and guest clinician for Ring Around the City Festival, Hong Kong.

Susan has had a very diversified music career.  She founded and was the artistic director of three community handbell ensembles in Southeastern Michigan: Classical Bells of Metropolitan Detroit, The Detroit Handbell Ensemble, and the Renaissance Ringers.  Susan was also an organist, a choral director (both children and adults), and of course, a handbell director at several Detroit area churches, a span of twenty five years.  Certified in Orff-Schulwerk®, Susan taught rhythm and movement classes to young children within the string department at the Detroit Community Music School, and as adjunct faculty at Marygrove College (Detroit), Susan developed a handbell program as an elective course for music education students.

In 2014 Susan retired after 35 years as a sales representative for Malmark, Inc., Plumsteadville, PA.  As a commitment to new handbell and handchime programs, Susan offered basic instructional clinics for hundreds of individual churches and schools throughout the entire state of Michigan.

Currently, Susan owns and oversees Handbell Services, Inc., a unique business based in Detroit, Michigan. Working with talented American artists and manufacturers, Susan creates unique gift and educational products made available to the global handbell community through this online website. Susan’s passion for business plus her teaching and artistic background are all reflected in the many products and services offered by her company.
