About Susan Berry, Owner of Handbell Services
Susan Berry, based in Detroit, Michigan, has been involved in the handbell world since 1972 — as a church musician, performer, director, educator, author, and entrepreneur.
- In 2000, after ten years of research, study, and writing, Susan self-published Healthy Ringing® — a comprehensive guide combining handbells and health. This publication changed the way handbell musicians approach their instrument and remains the most comprehensive book on handbell ringing in the world.
- In the 1980s, Susan co-authored the Learning to Ring curriculum and the popular instructional video Bell Basics, both widely used for decades.
- Over the years, Susan served as a featured director and teacher at national and international handbell events, founded and directed three community handbell ensembles in Southeastern Michigan, worked as a church musician for 25 years, taught at a local college, and represented Malmark, Inc. of Plumsteadville, PA as a Michigan sales representative for 45 years beginning in 1978.
- Susan founded Handbell Services in 1991. Though retired from active leadership in the handbell community, she continues to serve ringers and directors throughout the United States — offering a carefully curated collection of specialty gifts, supplies, and resources through her company.
